Mister Lippi Reduces World Cup Roster to 28 with Surprise Cut of Fabio Grosso

Sports News - May 04, 2010
Italian boss, Marcello Lippi. He has been accused
of sentimentality with the old guard. Fabio Grosso,
who figured prominently at World Cup 2006, met a
cruel fate yesterday that demonstrated Lippi's
pragmatic approach.

Marcello Lippi
released his provisional 30 man roster for the World Cup in South Africa last week. Yesterday, he cut two players: Antonio Candreva and Fabio Grosso. Six Juventus players remain from the original eight. Only one from second place side, AS Roma, (Danielle De Rossi) was selected. None from 2009/2010 Italian champions, Internazionale Milano, made the cut.

Nine players from the 2006 World Cup Champion team were selected for South Africa: Buffon, Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Camoranesi, Gattuso, Pirlo, De Rossi, Gilardino and Iaquinta.

World Cup 2006 Hero, Fabio Grosso, Cut

Fabio Grosso will not make the trip to South Africa.

"Mi è costato chiamarlo, come mi è costato dover rinunciare a 14 dei 23 con i quali abbiamo passato momenti importanti in Germania. Ieri l'ho chiamato, non sapete quanto mi sia dispiaciuto fare questa telefonata, ma ho ritenuto fare così e la faccio, per onestà intellettuale. Ho detto di non pensare mai che avrei fatto le convocazioni per debito di riconoscenza".
"It was tough to call him (Fabio Grosso, hero of Germany 2006), as it was difficult not to include 14 players from the 23 that spent important moments with us in Germany.

Yesterday, I called him, and you don't know how difficult it was to make this phone call, but I had to do it for intellectual honesty. I told him not to ever think that I made selections out of any debt of gratitude."

Mario Balotelli
and Davide Santon of Inter Milan
are two young rising Italian talents without tickets
to South Africa. Santon featured last summer at
the Confederations Cup but his form dipped this year
and he has been injured. Balotelli is an explosive
talent with an equally volatile temperament.
