Week/Giornata 1 of the Italian Serie A

The Serie A began in 1929. Internazionale Milano is the only team to play every year in the top flight, and they have won the Scudetto (Championship) for the last four years. For this season, AS Bari, Livorno, and Parma were promoted from Serie B.
Quotes of the Week in Italian Calcio

"Juventus will win the Scudetto." Marcello Lippi of the Azzurri.

"Lippi is the coach of all Italian soccer. He showed a lack of respect to name Juventus." Jose' Mourinho of Internazionale.

"Last year when Lippi predicted Inter to win the Scudetto, nobody said anything." Ciro Ferrara of Juventus.

"I am the only thing that Lippi and Mourinho can agree on: Neither one wants me." Antonio Cassano of Sampdoria and Bari Vecchia.

"Amauri will come into the Azzurri with great enthusiasm." Gigi Buffon of Juventus.

"Ronaldinho is our Usain Bolt." Premier Silvio Berlusconi, patron of AC Milan.

"This is a fantastic opportunity. The Bari fans are passionate about their team and with new management we hope to grow this franchise into one of the most successful and competitive in Europe." Tim Barton, CEO of JMJ Holdings, the new American owners of AS Bari.

Week 1 Fixtures

Bologna 1 x Fiorentina 1(Osvaldo gave Bologna the early lead, but Adrian Mutu equalized for La Viola.)
Siena 1 x AC Milan 2 (Leonardo earned his first win on the Milan bench with a brace by Pato. Ghezzal scored for the Tuscans.)

Internazionale 1 x AS Bari 1

Bari returned to the top flight after 8 years in Serie B, and were not in awe of the millionaires from Inter. A very dubious penalty was awarded to Inter early in the second half, and Samuel Eto'o clinically converted from the spot. But Vitaly Kutuzov equalized a few minutes later, and Emanuel Rivas almost won it at the death for the Puglians. An impressive start by a very organized and determined Bari side. Inter, as happened several times last season, dropped points at the San Siro. Next Saturday they will face Milan in the derby.

"Mi aspettavo una gara difficile, un Bari con qualità. Mi aspettavo di più dalla mia squadra, è difficile giocare con una squadra che arriva dalla B con una mentalità positiva. ma noi restiamo motivati."

Italian Source: La Gazzetta dello Sport, 23 August 2009.
"I expected a difficult game, a Bari side with quality. I expected more from my team, and it is difficult to play with a team that arrives from Serie B with a positive mentality, but we remain motivated."

--- Jose' Mourinho
"The whole stadium saw that it was an imaginary penalty."

--- Vitaly Kutuzov of Bari after the game on Gazzetta TV.

Italian Source: La Gazzetta dello Mezzogiorno, 23 August 2009.

"It was great to see such maturity, personality, and calmness that the players showed along with the way they assimilated things. We took away an important point and there was a little regret in the end, which says a lot about the game we played, but the real positive note was how we played, we wanted to produce, and in some instances we did produce, which was the most important thing.

The fact that we made Inter change their tactical system three times is a point of pride for our players who were able to read the situations well. It was important to prove ourselves against the head of the class, with two young players making their Serie A debuts. I couldn't be more pleased. In some roles we are weak, but this is for the club to decide. We train and look to do our best."

--- Giampiero Ventura of AS Bari.
Catania 1 x Sampdoria 2
Genoa 3 x AS Roma 2
Juventus 1 x Chievo Verona 0 (Vincenzo Iaquinta scored on a well-placed looping header from a perfect free kick by Diego. Chievo fought hard and pushed Juve to the limits.)
Lazio of Rome 1 x Atalanta of Bergamo 0
Livorno 0 x Cagliari 0
Palermo 2 x Napoli 1
Udinese 2 x Parma 2
