Week 31 Fixtures: A Nation Mourns

Earthquake Strikes Central Italy
Saturday, 11 April 2009

Due to the earthquake that killed 289 people, and displaced thousands more, a minute of silence will be held before all Serie A games. Serie B games were postponed until next Tuesday. Today was a national day of mourning in Italy.

Clubs Donate Gate Receipts

Many clubs have decided to donate the entire gate proceeds to help the survivors of L'Aquila. Among them, Catania, Genoa, Fiorentina, and Napoli. No doubt more will follow in the weeks to come.

The National Italian American Foundation, which is based in Washington, D.C, has created a relief fund to assist the survivors in their time of need.

“NIAF extends its sincerest condolences to the victims and their families suffering from the recent earthquake that struck residents as they slept. This tragic disaster has claimed the lives of innocent people. Words cannot convey the Foundation’s sense of loss for the victims. Our hearts and prayers are with them and the rescue workers, who are frantically trying to save those who remained trapped in the debris,” NIAF President Joseph V. Del Raso, Esq., said. Del Raso’s ancestors trace their roots to the region of Abruzzo.
