BRIDGEWATER, NEW JERSEY – Sunday, April 5, 2009 – The Los Angeles Sol (Women’s Professional Soccer) defeated Sky Blue FC (New Jersey/New York), 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark.

“I was very happy with our performance today,” said Los Angeles Sol Head Coach Abner Rogers. “To come back and play a very different style than we had to last week and still come up with the result we did pleases me a great deal.”

Despite the fact that neither team scored in the opening 40 minutes, the Sol had the better of the chances, including two opportunities for Marta inside the penalty area. The first chance came in the 19th minute when she created some space for herself and unleashed a low left-footed shot that sailed wide of the far post.

In the 25th minute, Marta eluded two defenders inside the area, only to slip as she reached the endline, allowing the ball to squirt off her left foot and easily into the hands of Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Jenni Branham.

In the 42nd minute, Marta put the Sol ahead 1-0 after splitting two defenders inside the box and putting her off-balance shot inside the far post for her first WPS goal. Marta then doubled the visitors’ lead to 2-0 in the 44th minute when she tapped in a cross from Chinese front-line mate Han Duan.

“I am very happy to have scored my first two goals in WPS,” said Marta. “They were both opportunities that I was glad that I was able take advantage of and give us the win.”

After a quite start to the second stanza, the teams traded chances in the latter stages of the second half, with Aly Wagner and Han Duan trying to find the net for the Sol, but neither scored and the game ended 2-0.

The Los Angeles Sol will return to action on Sunday, April 19 at The Home Depot Center on the campus of California-State University Dominguez Hills in Carson, when it hosts FC Gold Pride (Bay Area) at 1 pm PT.
