2009 Schedule for the Azzurri

Here are the upcoming games in 2009 for the Azzurri.

The fixture against the Republic of Ireland should be very interesting. Giovanni Trapattoni, the former Azzurri boss, manages the Republic. He is assisted by Azzurri World Cup legend, Marco Tardelli. To the best of knowledge, this will be the first time that a former Italian National Team manager has ever faced the Azzurri. In 1998 during the World Cup, Cesare Maldini came one game from facing his son and the rest of the Azzurri in France. He was managing Paraguay at the time.

10 February 2009: Brasil 2 x Italia 0 (Friendly in London).

29 March 2009: Montenegro x Italia (WCQ).

01 April 2009: Italia x Republic of Ireland (WCQ in Bari).

06 June 2009: Friendly in Italy. Opponent not yet determined.

10 June 2009: Friendly in South Africa. Opponent not yet determined.

15 June 2009: Italia x USA (Confederations Cup in Pretoria).

18 June 2009: Italia x Egypt (Confederations Cup in Johannesburg).

21 June 2009: Italia x Brasil (Confederations Cup in Pretoria).

(Potentially two more games in South Africa).

13 August 2009: Switzerland x Italia (Friendly in Geneva).

05 September 2009: Georgia x Italia (WCQ)

09 September 2009: Italia x Bulgaria (WCQ).

10 October 2009: Republic of Ireland x Italy (WCQ from Dublin). This could decide the group. Only one team qualifies directly from each group for WC 2010. The eight best second place teams will enter a Play-In during November.

14 October 2009: Italia x Cyprus (WCQ).

Group 8 World Cup Qualification Table (Top team automatically qualifies).
