Emergency Appeal for Funds by Alive and Kicking UK

Alive and Kicking UK.

Dear Supporter,

We are writing to you because Alive & Kicking is facing huge challenges. If we do not raise funds urgently, stitchers and other staff at our operations in Africa will lose their jobs and many thousands of children in Africa will no longer have decent balls to play with.

Over 150 people in Kenya, Zambia, and South Africa hand stitch Alive & Kicking balls at a fair wage. Their jobs are now at risk because in the current economic climate ball donations have plummeted. As a result our country operations need to be subsidised which is putting an enormous strain on our resources here in the UK.

Every job provided by Alive & Kicking usually supports an extended family of up to 7 or 8 people for whom the stitcher will be the only wage-earner. The balls they make put a smile on thousands of children’s faces in Africa and unless they receive Alive & Kicking balls they seldom get to play proper games. Printed with health messages the balls are also valuable tools for our partner organisations to speak to children about HIV and AIDS, malaria and TB, three diseases that are likely to spread more widely with increased poverty.

Alive & Kicking’s youngest operation is in South Africa and is now particularly vulnerable. It is dependent on Alive & Kicking UK for capital to finance its second year of life and is trying desperately hard to find sponsorship. In the lead up to the 2010 World Cup, A&K South Africa has the potential to do spectacularly well and there is no telling what positive effects a continued presence there will have for the possible expansion of Alive & Kicking in the future. Its survival now is more important than ever.

This is why we turn to you, our most valued supporters, to ask for donations to help keep our stitching centres running. You can help safeguard the livelihoods of our stitchers and continue to give children across Africa something to smile about as well as a greater awareness of disease. Our target is to raise £20,000 through this appeal which will enable us to continue to provide our services. Owing to minimal overheads in the UK you can be sure that the whole of what you give really will benefit people in Africa. You can donate by sending cash or a cheque using the attached donation form or you can go online at http://www.justgiving.com/process/whitelabel/?_WhiteLabelId=1201 , and follow the instructions on screen.

Thank you for your support in the past and we do hope you will wish to continue to support us now. With your help Alive & Kicking will thrive in 2009 and beyond.

Yours sincerely,

James Flecker, Chairman
