Real Madrid 0 x Alex Del Piero 2: Another Epic Win by Juventus

First Goal by Del Piero

A night of firsts at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid:
  • First win by Juventus in 46 years against Real Madrid on home turf.
  • First goal by Alex Del Piero at the Bernabeu.
  • A rare standing ovation when Del Piero was subbed out during injury time.
  • Diego Maradona and Carlos Bilardo were in attendance after being named the new Argentine brain trust.
This was the 14th time that these two fabled teams had met in European competition. Two weeks ago, Juventus won in Torino, 2 x 1. Del Piero scored in that game as well. After this win tonight, Juventus has qualified for the elimination round of the Champions League with two games to spare.

Here was his second on perfect free kick to the lower left corner past Iker Casillas who admitted fault:

"On top of any analysis that one can make about the play, I recognize that the error on the second goal was mine. Instinctively, I thought that the ball was going to go higher and I took a step forward that left the right flank unprotected. It was my fault and I can't blame anything or anyone. If I didn't take that step, I would have caught it." Iker Casillas
Del Piero Shares His Joy

"You live for these emotions, I am happy that the public gave me that applause when I left the pitch... Even though I scored, this is a crazy stadium, and it was a very important game for us. For me it was a good moment. I am happy to have scored in front of Maradona. I hope that Diego comes to see us play more often!
