Gigi Casiraghi Names His Olympic Team Roster

Image details: ITALY V BULGARIA served by picapp.com

Pier Luigi Casiraghi, a former Lazio and Juventus star, along with an Azzurri player, has named his 22 man roster for the Beijing Games. He has enjoyed significant success coaching the U-21 team, and in my opinion, he will one day manage the senior Azzurri.

Italy is in Group D with Cameroon, Honduras, and South Korea. Play will begin on 06 August in China. This team is known as the "Azzurrini."

07 August: Italy x Honduras
10 August: Italy x South Korea
13 August: Italy x Cameroon

: Consigli (Atalanta), Sirigu (Palermo), Viviano (Brescia);

: S. Bocchetti (Genoa), Coda (Udinese), Criscito (Genoa), De Ceglie (Juventus), De Silvestri (Lazio), Motta (Udinese), Ranocchia (Arezzo)

: Abate (Milan), Cigarini (Parma), Dessena (Parma), Marchisio (Juventus), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Nocerino (Palermo), Russotto (Treviso)

Strikers: Acquafresca (Cagliari), Candreva (Udinese), Giovinco (Juventus), Rocchi (Lazio), G. Rossi (Villarreal).

As you will see, several young Juventus players, past and present, are on this team. Along with Giuseppe Rossi of Villarreal from La Liga.

The only over age player is Tommaso Rocchi of Lazio. Each Olympic team is allowed 3 players over the age of 23. For example, Robinho will represent Brasil. Juan Roman Riquelme will play for Argentina. Mister Casiraghi complained that some of the big Italian clubs were reluctant to make their players available to him.
Italy has not won Olympic Gold since 1936. Actually, in the span of 4 years they won two World Cups and the Gold Medal. No team before or since has achieved that distinction.
