Italy 3 x Portugal 1

Goals by Luca Toni in the 45th, Fabio Cannavaro (deflection from a Pirlo shot) in the 51st, and Fabio Quagliarella in the 78th minute as the Azzurri attacked relentlessly in front of a very pro-Italian crowd in Zurich, Switzerland. For the third time, Phil Scolari failed to defeat the Italians. Pirlo had an apparent goal disallowed in the first half due to a hand ball that actually struck his chest area. Quaresma scored in 77th minute for Portugal.

This was the sixth straight win by Italy.

England 2 x Switzerland 1

Fabio Capello begins with a win over a very resolute Swiss side. Jermain Jenas scored in the 40th minute, and England had several other chances. Eren Derdiyok for Switzerland equalized in the 58th minute. Four minutes later, recent substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips scored the winner for the Three Lions in front of an enthusiastic and expectant crowd at Wembley.

USA 2 x Mexico 2

In a very entertaining game from Houston, Texas, the two CONCACAF rivals battled to a draw in front of 70,000 mostly Mexican supporters. Goals by Americans Oguchi Oneywu and Josimer "Jozy" Altidore in the 29th and 41st minutes, respectively, along with a brace by Jonny Magallon in the 35th and 47th minutes, respectively, for El Tri. The American home unbeaten streak since 2000 remains intact: 8 wins and 2 draws.
