Roberto Donadoni Releases His Selections for the Key Match with Scotland

On Sunday night, Azzurri head coach Roberto Donadoni released the names of the 23 men entrusted to salvage qualification for Euro 2008. The key game will be next Saturday in Glasgow against Scotland at 1700 local time. A loss by either team will end their road to Austria/Switzerland.

Winner Takes All

A victory by Scotland will likely eliminate the Italians (France only needs 1 point from their last game at Ukraine), and remains their best avenue for qualification. With an Italian win, the Azzurri and France will qualify. A tie by Italy, along with a subsequent home win against the Faroe Islands, will also see them qualify. This will be Scotland's last qualification game.
France sits top of the table on 25 points, Scotland has 24, and Italy has 23. Italy has two games remaining. The next game against the Faroe Islands on 21 November will take place in Modena at 2030 local time.
Del Piero and Inzaghi Omitted

Mister Donadoni did not select World Cup champions Alessandro Del Piero and Filippo Inzaghi for these pivotal games. Del Piero had refused to play on the wing, and was not selected for games last month against Georgia and South Africa. Apparently, his international career under Mr. Donadoni has ended. With regards to Pippo Inzaghi, the exclusion was surprising given his international experience and recent form.
