Daniele De Rossi: "Scotland Not At The Same Level As Us."

Daniele De Rossi, the midfielder for AS Roma and the Italian National Team, has initiated the war of words preceding next month's Euro 2008 qualifier with Scotland. In today's edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, De Rossi, as we say in Italian, had no hair on his tongue:

"Sarebbe davvero grave non qualificarci per i prossimi Europei . A Glasgow sarà come una finale. Siamo l’Italia e dovremo imporci".

"Siamo i campioni del mondo, gli avversari non possono essere sul nostro stesso livello. Cercheremo di far valere le nostre qualità. Loro avranno in più il sostegno dei tifosi. Troveremo un ambientaccio, tifosi che cantano per tutti i novanta minuti. Mi dispiace che in Italia manchi un trasporto simile per la Nazionale".
"It would be grave if we didn't qualify for the upcoming European championships. In Glasgow, it will be like a final. We are Italy and we need to impose ourselves on them.

We are the champions of the world, the adversaries can't be at the same level as us. We will look to make our qualities worthwhile. They have an advantage with the support of the fans. We will encounter a tremendous atmosphere, fans that sing for the entire 90 minutes. I'm sorry that in Italy a similar enthusiasm for the national team is missing."
Key facts
  • Italy has never won a competitive game in Scotland.
  • Scotland has achieved twice in one year what Italy has not done once since 1978: They defeated France on two occasions.
  • Since 2005, the two teams have faced each other three times. Italy won both times at home (2 x 0), and Scotland drew in Glasgow (1 x 1) during WC 2006 qualification.
