Fugees Start the Season with a Grant from Nike

Their story attracted mainstream media attention. Even Hollywood has become involved with a possible movie project. Regular American were touched by their story, and have created fundraisers, sold bracelets, and one young man donated his monthly allowance.

Helena Olivero of the Atlanta Journal Constitution wrote an article yesterday about latest good news from Nike for the Clarkston, Georgia soccer team.

"We've struggled for years to have enough shin guards so this is incredible," said Luma Mufleh, head coach of the Fugees, 120 boys and girls on four soccer teams.

Last year, Mufleh said she and one other volunteer coached, mentored and tutored the entire group of kids. This season, 25 volunteers work with the kids every week, teaching them reading skills and helping them with school work.

This week, Nike announced that it would donate $100,000 for new soccer gear for the Fugees, including cleats, jerseys and shin guards. The grant — from Nike's "Let Me Play" program — will also pay for a summer camp for the Fugees at Mufleh's alma mater, Smith College in Massachusetts."
