Real Madrid is Coming to America

Today, a very positive development happened for North American soccer. One of the best clubs in the world, Real Madrid, has signed a contract with SCP Worldwide. Mr. Ramon Calderon, the President of Real Madrid, entered into this agreement to come to the New World.

SCP is headed by Mr. Dave Checketts, who is also the operating manager of Real Salt Lake of the MLS. SCP is an investment and consulting firm with headquarters in New York City. They plan to brand the "real" Real to new fans in North America. Mr. Checketts was in Madrid to put pen to paper. And to fulfill a declaration that he made a few years ago when Real Salt Lake came into existence. "We will have an association with Real Madrid."

According to Yahoo World Soccer:

"The contract with SCP Worldwide, which includes plans for the creation of Real academies in the U.S., broadcasting rights to the club's television content and the team's participation in friendlies over the coming years, is intended to win over 'millions' of new fans."

Well done, Mr. Checketts. A few years ago, I viewed his comment with suspicion. I also felt that taking the name (along with a replication of the famous crown insignia) from one of the most famous teams in the world for an unknown team in Salt Lake City was disrespectful to the history and tradition of Real Madrid. Obviously, it was a public relations strategy to sell the game in the great desert of world football: North America. But thanks to the efforts of Mr. Checketts and SCP Worldwide, David Beckham's soon-to-be former team will begin a fruitful association in North America.
