Gold Cup: Guadeloupe 2 x Honduras 1

History was made this evening in Houston, Texas. Guadeloupe, an overseas region of France, advanced to the semi-final round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. They defeated one of the most entertaining teams in this tournament, Honduras, 2 x 1.

They only had three goal scoring opportunites; however, they converted two of them early in the first half. In the 17th minute, Jocelyn Angloma shot past the Honduran keeper, Orlin Vallecilo, to give the islanders the lead. Three minutes later, Honduras was stunned by another goal by Richard Socrier.

Honduras pushed forward for the rest of the game, but were only succesful with one nicely headed goal by team captain, Carlos Pavon, in the 71st minute. The Gold Cup comes to an early end for a very good Honduran side.

Guadelope has a few famous footballers in its pedigree. Lilian Thuram of Barcelona, and a World Cup winner with France, was born there. Thierry Henry of Arsenal and the French National Team, claims ancestry to the island via his father, who was born in Guadeloupe.

Guadeloupe will face Mexico in the semi-finals on Thursday night in Chicago. In the preliminary game, the USA will meet Canada.

Bonne chance, Guadeloupe!
