Coach Walter Smith on David Beckham and the MLS

Coach Walter Smith was interviewed by Sue McMann of the prestigious League Managers Association of Great Britain. Mr. Smith recently took Rangers Glasgow to play a friendly against the Los Angeles Galaxy. The Scottish side won, 0 x 1. Mr. Smith was the former National Team manager of Scotland, and resurrected their program immensely.

Here are a few comments by Mr. Smith when asked about the standard of soccer in the MLS, along with how it would impact David Beckham.

Standard of Play:

“There’s no way that they are going to compare with Premiership football. If you look at a standard you would look at down at the Championship level (English first division) for a lot of the teams that are there, maybe not top Championship. They have good teams but the problem I think is the depth of the pool of players that each of the clubs have is stretched to full."

How will the MLS affect David Beckham?

"I think the one thing that there’ll be at LA Galaxy is that they have a great level of fitness and the American lads who play will never be short of that; they all had decent pace and were all very fit... It won’t be easy and it would not be easy for anyone to go over and play there.”
