Edgar Steven Davids: The Pit Bull

Courtesy of the fine international soccer coverage by Telemundo, I was able to watch the Dutch classic of PSV Eindhoven versus Ajax Amsterdam. Unfortunately for the hosts, PSV, it was a long afternoon. Ajax summarily defeated them, 1 x 5.

This was the first time that I had seen Edgar Davids play for Ajax. Even at age 34, he still has the enthusiasm of a much younger player. Throughout his storied career, Davids has been known for several things: his trademark long dreadlocks, the large googles to protect his eyes due to glaucoma, his intelligence, and his pit bull characteristics.

He has played for some of the most famous names in world football: Ajax (where he began), AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Tottenham Hotspurs. He was born in Suriname, and is fluent in many languages. He in known for his fiery temperment both on and off the pitch. I watched him play at Juventus for many years. There was discussion that the MLS had made a bid for his services. But he decided, after a falling out with fellow Dutchman Martin Jol at Tottenham, to return to his soccer roots at Ajax Amsterdam. He has represented Holland 74 times at various tournaments: Euro 96, World Cup 1998, Euro 2000, World Cup 2002, and Euro 2004.
