Roberto Baggio Celebrates His 40th Birthday

Today was the 40th birthday of Roberto Baggio. The Codino Divino of Italian calcio. He retired in 2004, and has stayed mostly out of the news. There were a few rumors that he might return to Brescia or Bologna; however, since the Italian word for noise is "rumore," nothing came of these developments.

I just read his new blog, and he said that he would communicate more in the future. Apparently, his previous web site had been down or inactive since his retirement. Baggio is a very interesting man. I read his autobiography, "Una Porta Nel Cielo," a few years ago. Not many Buddhists hunt wild game in Argentina, and don't apologize for it. He also described, in great detail, his famous penalty kick miss against Brasil in the 1994 World Cup final in Pasadena, CA. Ironically, he lamented that few have ever mentioned that two other Azzurri missed from the spot that day: Daniele Massaro and Franco Baresi. Yet what do we always read? "Baggio Lost the World Cup for Italy." Without him, they would have never played in the the final game.

Roberto Baggio

"Only those who have the courage to miss a penalty take them."

Buon compleanno, Roby. Tanti auguri. Calcio has never been the same without your presence.
