Best And Worst Of 2006

As I look back on the year in football, here are some positive and negative moments that stand out.

+ Italy winning their fourth World Cup, and the second one in my lifetime. But Azzurri fans don't want to wait another 24 years for an international triumph.

- Calciopoli: The worst scandal in Italian football that led to the demotion and disgrace of my favorite team, Juventus, to the Serie B, for the first time in its history.

+ Excellent television coverage by Univision and Telefutura during WC 2006 for North American audiences.

- Disappointing performance by Team USA in Germany.

+ The resurrection of Diego Maradona.

- The disgrace of Zinedine Zidane.

+ Barcelona. led by the charismatic Ronaldinho Gaucho, winning the Champions League.

- Juventus being eliminated in the knock-out phase.

+ Fabio Cannavaro.

- Anyone who said he wasn't the best player in the world during 2006.

+ Gigi Buffon, Mauro Camoranesi, and Alex Del Piero. Top stars and World Champions who didn't jump ship when the Juventus boat sunk.

- Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Patrick Vieira. Wearing the scudetto on the Inter shirt that they won last year with Juventus.

On a personal note, spending time over Thanksgiving with my good friend, Jorge Zamorano. If I could only get him to stop wearing that damn AC Milan shirt! :-)

Happy New Year.
