Billy Costacurta, Ageless Milanese Warrior

Tonight in Athens, Greece, Alessandro "Billy" Costacurta made Champions League history. Despite AEK's 1 to 0 defeat of AC Milan, Costacurta became the oldest man (40) to ever start a game in the competition. His longevity is a testament to his tenacity, and perhaps to the regenerative qualities of the water surrounding Milan. The famous springs of San Pellegrino mineral water hail from that region.

Joining him tonight in Athens was Paolo Maldini, now in his 23rd season for the rossoneri. When the inevitable occurs, it will be a very strange sight not to see either Milanese legend on the pitch.

Billy is also a baseball fan, and had the honor to throw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium in 2005. It was an event that received sparse coverage by the North American media. But how many Italian guys named Billy can say they threw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium, and also won the Champions League title four times? Only one: Signor Costacurta.
