Part II: Interview between Christian Panucci and Jose' Mourinho on Sky Sports/Italy.
Mourinho discussed his time with Porto, opening his doors to the Real Madrid basketball coach, the situation before and after he arrived at Chelsea, his relationship with Roman Abramovich and differences between English and Italian media.
I tuoi giocatori dicevano che si allenavano simulando durante la settimana la partita della domenica.
"E’ vero. In quel momento, a Porto, avevamo la possibilità di fare questo, perché in Portogallo ci sono meno partite, una coppa soltanto e la possibilità di organizzare meglio le partite, di scegliere quando giocare. Se volevano giocare lunedì e riposare un giorno di più, giocavano lunedì. Se volevano giocare venerdì, prima di giocare una partita di Champions, potevano giocare venerdì. In Portogallo c’è questa possibilità dei club di scegliere, non sono le tv a controllare la situazione. E noi facevamo molto questo. Sapevo che la mia squadra non era una squadra di gente con grande esperienza e con grande cultura tattica ed era importante per noi fare questo tipo di lavoro. Era gente con una consapevolezza molto grande delle proprie qualità e dei propri limiti, una squadra che poteva nascondere i suoi problemi e dove ognuno era capace di dare la vita per gli altri. Una squadra fantastica con gente che rimarrà nel mio cuore, come tutti gli altri, ma sono cresciuto con loro, sono arrivato alla prima Champions con loro, è gente che in questo momento ha praticamente la mia età e ha praticamente finito la carriera, però saremo fratelli per tutta la vita".
CP: Your players said that they trained simulating the Sunday match during the week.
JP: It's true. In that moment, at Porto, we had the possibility to do this because in Portugal there are fewer games. Only one Cup and the chance to better organize the games. To choose when to play. If they wanted to play on Monday and rest an extra day, they played on Monday. If they wanted to play on Friday before playing a Champions League match, they could play on Friday. In Portugal, there's this possibility by the club to choose. Television doesn't control the situation. And we did this often.
I knew that my team wasn't a side with players of great experience and with a great tactical culture, and it was important for us to do this type of work. It was people with a very great knowledge of their own qualities and limitations. A team that could hide its problems and where each one of them was capable to fight for the rest. A fantastic team with men who remain in my heart, just like all of the others, but I grew up with them. I arrived at the first Champions League with them. And people that in this time are practically the same age as I and have just about finished their careers. But they will be brothers for a lifetime.
Ettore Messina ha dichiarato di pensare che nel basket la casualità fosse poca, ma dopo aver parlato con te dice che capita anche nel calcio, tu riduci la casualità come allenatore.
"Cerco di farlo. Ettore è stato qua e siamo tutti e due allenatori del Real Madrid però la distanza spaziale dove lavoriamo noi è enorme, siamo lontanissimi. Lui è venuto qui una volta con i suoi assistenti e io ho sempre una curiosità altissima di sapere come lavorano negli altri sport. Per esempio, la pallacanestro è uno sport dove tu puoi pensare e imparare, ho deciso di aprire completamente la porta a Messina per fargli vedere come lavoriamo noi. Abbiamo un dipartimento molto meno organizzato di scout e preparazione delle partite e analisi dell’avversario e della nostra stessa performance. Ho aperto la porta ed Ettore ha capito che noi lavoriamo seriamente e lavoriamo tanto. Lui ha capito questo e mi ha fatto felice perché molta gente ha la sensazione che nel calcio viviamo tutti solo del talento dei giocatori e mi sembra che nel calcio di oggi, dove tutte le squadre hanno bravi giocatori, bravi allenatori e sono preparati bene fisicamente, mi sembra che avere questo tipo di organizzazione possa fare la differenza".
CP: Ettore Messina (coach of the Real Madrid basketball team) said that he thought in basketball, the hazard was lesser, but after talking with you, he understood that also in football, you reduce the danger as the manager.
JM: I look to do that. Ettore was here and both of us are coaches at Real Madrid, but the spatial distance where we work is enormous. We are very far apart. He came here once with his assistants, and I always had a great level of curiosity to know how they work in other sports. For example, basketball is a sport where you can think and learn. I decided to completely open the door to Messina to let him see how we work.
We have a far-less organized scouting department and preparation of the games and analysis of opponents and of our own performance. I opened the door to Ettore who understood that we work seriously and very hard. He understood this and made me happy because many people have the sensation that in football, we live only on the talents of the players. And it seems to me that in today's football, where all of the teams have great players, great coaches and are prepared well physically, it seems to me to have this type of organization can make the difference.
Nella partita di Supercoppa col Milan, il secondo tempo del tuo Porto diede l’immagine all’Europa che il Porto, l’anno dopo in Champions, avrebbe potuto fare qualcosa di grande.
"Sì. Abbiamo perso perché il Milan era il Milan e tu sai che il Milan sa perfettamente come gestire un risultato. Loro hanno segnato nei primi minuti con un gol di testa di Sheva sul secondo palo, però dopo noi abbiamo giocato e dominato la partita e nel secondo tempo potevamo perfettamente segnare. Anch’io ho avuto quella sensazione. Volevamo ovviamente vincere la Supercoppa, però, dopo aver perso, ero felice per questa sensazione. L’anno dopo, se giocavamo un’altra volta contro il Milan potevamo vincere. E se tu sai di poter vincere contro il Milan che è campione d’Europa, tu puoi vincere contro qualsiasi squadra. Questa è stata una sensazione importante per me e per i giocatori. Perché quando tu vinci la Coppa Uefa, noi abbiamo giocato contro il Celtic in finale, contro la Lazio che era una grande squadra e abbiamo vinto molto bene in semifinale, però quando tu perdi con il Milan e provi quella sensazione, vuol dire che sei preparato per la Champions. Montecarlo non è stata una coppa persa, ma l'inizio dell'autostima e della fiducia che potevamo vincere e competere senza aver paura di nessuno".
CP: In the Super Cup match against AC Milan, the second half of your Porto gave the image to Europe that Porto, a year after being in the Champions League, was able to do something great.
JM: Yes. We lost because Milan was Milan and you know that Milan knows perfectly well how to obtain a result. They scored in the opening minutes with a header by Shevchenko at the far post, but afterward, we played and dominated the game and in the second half we could have easily scored. Even I had that feeling. They wanted to obviously win the Super Cup; however, after having lost, I was still happy for this feeling. The next year, if we played another time against Milan, we could have won. And you know if you can win against Milan who was European champion, you can beat any team. This was the most important feeling for me and the players.
Because when you win a UEFA Cup, we played against Celtic in the final, against Lazio that was a great side and we won very well in the semi-final. But when you lose against Milan and feel that sensation, you can say you are ready for the Champions League. Montecarlo was not a Cup final that was lost, but the start of the self-esteem and confidence that we could win and compete without fearing anyone.
Quando ho giocato a Londra il Chelsea si stava affacciando all’Europa. Poi sei arrivato tu e lo hai cambiato.
"Io conosco bene la storia del Chelsea e tu hai giocato in un grande Chelsea. Penso che in quel momento, se il Chelsea avesse avuto i soldi di Roman Abramovich per comprare due o tre giocatori giusti per fare la differenza, il vostro Chelsea poteva farlo. Dopo, c’è stato un periodo di transizione negativo, perché c’erano i soldi di Roman, ma le scelte sbagliate e per 2-3 anni il Chelsea ha avuto i soldi di Roman e la voglia di Roman di fare la storia del Chelsea, 2-3 giocatori che quando giocavi tu non c’erano e che erano fantastici. Oer esempio Lampard nel calcio Inglese per me è un giocatore dell’altro mondo, però mancava al Chelsea qualcosa e per me qualcosa è arrivato quando siamo arrivati noi. Un tipo di leadership diverso - io non sono umile e tu lo sai – un tipo di preparazione psicologica diversa per la squadra e l’utilizzo dei soldi di Roman nei 2 o 3 giocatori che mancavano per fare una squadra veramente top. E con i soldi di Roman e il gruppo che avevamo, abbiamo fatto un cambio traumatico in senso positivo che ha permesso di vincere per due anni consecutivi il campionato e tante altre coppe e più che questo, una squadra per il futuro perché il Chelsea adesso ha esattamente gli stessi giocatori che aveva nel 2004 e nel 2005. E’ arrivato Anelka, è arrivato Ivanovic, però il Chelsea è esattamente la stessa squadra. E Ancelotti l’anno scorso ha vinto di nuovo e adesso il Chelsea ha la squadra per 2-3 anni in più".
CP: When I played in London, Chelsea was beginning to show itself (in European competitions). Then you arrived and changed it.JM: I know the history of Chelsea very well and you played in a great Chelsea side. I think that in that time, if Chelsea had the money of Roman Abramovich to buy two or three of the right players, it could have made a difference. Your Chelsea side could have done it.
Later, there was a negative transition period, because there were the funds provided by Roman, but the wrong choices. And for two or three years, Chelsea had Roman's money and his desire to make history at Chelsea, two or three players when you played weren't there and they were still fantastic.
For example,
Frank Lampard for me is from another planet in English football, but Chelsea was missing something and for me something arrived when we came. A different type of leadership.
I'm not humble and you know it; a diferent type of psychological preparation for the team and to utilize Roman's money to buy two or three players that were missing to make the team really a top side. And with Roman's money and the group we had, we made a traumatic change in a positive sense that allowed us to win the League two years on the trot and many other Cups. And more than this, a team for the future because Chelsea now has exactly the same players that we had in 2004 and 2005. Anelka arrived, Ivanonic came, but Chelsea is exactly the same team. And last year, Carlo Ancelotti won again and now Chelsea has a team for two or three more years.
Il tuo rapporto con Abramovic?
"Fantastico il tempo che abbiamo lavorato insieme e fantastico adesso. E con lui, con Moratti, con Pinto da Costa al Porto. Adesso è poco tempo che sono in Spagna, ma spero di poter dire lo stesso di Florentino. Non ho mai avuto problemi e sono sempre stato onesto. E quando sei onesto a volte devi dire al tuo presidente delle cose che lui non vuole sentire, ma è meglio così. Ho imparato tanto da loro e penso anch’io di aver dato loro una piccola collaborazione per essere più bravi nella loro presidenza".
CP: Your rapport with Roman Abramovich?
JM: The time we worked together was fantastic and still is now. With him, with Massimo Moratti (at Inter), with Pinto da Cosa at Porto. Now it's not been long that I've been in Spain, but I hope to be able to say the same about Florentino Perez. I never had problems and I've always been honest. And when you are honest at times you have to tell your President things he doesn't want to hear, but it's better that way. I learned a great deal and I also believe that I gave them a little bit of collaboration to be better in their presidencies.
Io con la stampa non ho mai avuto un bellissimo rapporto, soprattutto perché non mi piaceva tanto parlare, anche se adesso faccio l’opinionista. Tu sei sempre stato uno che ha detto quello che pensava a tutti, però in Inghilterra hai avuto sempre un bellissimo rapporto con i giornalisti.
"E’ completamente diverso, hai una vita completamente diversa. Al Chelsea tu non avevi lo stesso centro di allenamento che avevamo noi però l’allenamento era a porte aperte, c’erano zero giornalisti, zero tifosi e assolutamente niente. Una storia completamente diversa. Arrivavi a una conferenza stampa e nessuno voleva sapere chi giocava, perché non giocava, che sistema tattico usavi, nessuno voleva sapere questo. Solo volevano cercare 2 o 3 parole per fare l’ultima pagina di The Sun, Daily Mirror etc, tutto era molto più facile. Dopo l’Inghilterra sono arrivato in Italia e ho trovato un mondo completamente diverso e molto più complesso. Però per me il peggio in Italia è il dopo partita. Non perché non mi piace, mi piaceva tanto parlare in tv, parlare con Gianluca Vialli, Arrigo Sacchi, gente con un’opinione sincera che ti fa pensare e che ti fa imparare. Però dopo una partita voi giocatori siete stanchi e anche noi allenatori lo siamo. Dopo la partita uno deve mangiare, andare a casa, riposare. Invece, dopo una partita, un’ora di tv era pesante ed era la cosa che meno mi piaceva in assoluto. Ma ricordo sempre quello che diceva Crespo quando io l’ho avuto al Chelsea. Hernan mi diceva tante volte, perché io gli facevo tante domande sull’Italia e lui mi diceva sempre : 'Quando siamo in Italia siamo stanchi dell’Italia, quando non siamo in Italia, l’Italia manca'. . . ed è vero. Diceva ancora: 'In Italia se segno un gol, durante la settimana in televisione lo rivedo 50 volte. In Inghilterra se segno un gol e non lo vedo negli highlights della Bbc dopo la partita, non lo vedo più, perché nessuno lo trasmette durante la settimana'. In Italia è stressante, però è bella".
CP: I never had a good relationship with the media. Above all, because I don't like to talk a lot. Even if now I'm a commentator. You have always been someone who spoke your mind to everyone, but in England, you always had a great rapport with the journalists.
JM: It's completely different. You have a completely different life. At Chelsea, you didn't have the same training center that we had but training sessions were open to the public. There were zero journalists, zero fans and absolutely nobody. A completely different story. I came to a press conference and nobody wanted to know who was playing, why others didn't play, the tactical system I used. Nobody wanted to know this. They only wanted to look for two or three words to make the back page of The Sun, Daily Mirror, etc. Everything was much easier.
After England, I came to Italy and I discovered a completely different and more complicated world. For me, the worst thing about Italy was after the game. Not because I don't like it. I like to speak on TV a lot. To speak with Gianluca Vialli, Arrigo Sacchi, people with sincere opinions that make you think and make you learn. But after a game, you players are tired and also we as managers are tired. After the game, you need to eat, go home, rest. Instead, after a game, an hour of television was a burden and was absolutely the worst thing I didn't like. But I always remember what Hernan Crespo used to say whan I had him in England. Hernan told me many times, because I asked him a lot of questions about Italy and he always told me:
'When we are in Italy, we are tired of Italy. When we are not in Italy, we miss Italy.'
And it's true. He also used to say:
'In Italy if you score a goal, during the week, you see 50 replays. In England, if you score a goal and don't see it in the BBC highlights after the match, you don't see it again. Because nobody shows it during the week.'
In Italy, it is stressful, but it's beautiful.
Io ho avuto parecchie discussioni con qualche allenatore. Tu come avresti fatto con me?
"Mi piace la discussione e mi piace l’opinione. Ci sono dei giocatori con cui non è facile avere uno scambio di parole, ci sono difensori troppo difensivi per questi livelli. Ce ne sono altri che sono completamente aperti e a me piace. Io dico sempre: tu impari con i giocatori, con le loro domande, impari con le opinioni, loro ti fanno pensare e a me questo è sempre piaciuto. Penso che una squadra abbia bisogno di minimo 3 o 4 giocatori con questo tipo di carattere, che portano dubbi e la gente a pensare. A me piace molto questo e dai miei assistenti allenatori mi aspetto sempre questo. Dei miei giocatori principalmente davanti al gruppo ci sono giocatori che sono poco più difensivi. Però a me piace tanto quando tu senti che il giocatore non vuole il conflitto, ma quello che vuole è arrivare a una soluzione ed è lo stesso che vuoi tu, che è vincere e portare qualcosa in più".
CP: I've had a few discussions with various managers. How would you have done this with me?JM: I like discussions and I like opinions. There are players in which it is not easy to have a verbal exchange. There are defenders who are too defensive for these levels. There are others who are completely open and I like it. I always say:
You learn with players, by their questions. You learn by their opinions, they make you think and for me, I've always liked it. I believe that a team needs at least three or four players with this type of character who bring doubts and make people think. I really like this and from my assistant coaches, I always expect this. From my players, principally in front of the group, there are players who are a little less defensive. But I really like when you hear that a player doesn't want conflict, but what he wants is to reach a solution and you want the same. To win and bring something extra.

CP: Would you like to have an experience in South America?JM: I don't think so, because at this time in my career, I can be a little selfish and think about myself and remain at the top of European football for the next 10 to 15 years. Later, I see a distant experience. An experience in a completely different perspective in football. The United States: New York Red Bull. Los Angeles Galaxy. A house in Manhattan; a house in Malibu. I'm a little more in this direction.
