Mesut Özil in action against Real Sociedad
on 29 October 2011.
German international, Mesut Özil, has become a revelation in La Liga with Real Madrid. The man called, "The German engineer with Avatar eyes," by Gol TV commentator, Ray Hudson, has taken Los Blancos to a higher level with his cohesive midfield play, creativity, ball distribution and vision.
During comments made with the Madrid sports daily, Marca on 31 October, ahead of Real Madrid's UCL trip to France, Özil discussed the following topics:
- Iker Casillas and Cristiano Ronaldo on the upcoming FIFA Ballon d'Or.
- His thoughts on the upcoming UCL match with Olympique Lyonnais on 2 November.
- Real Madrid's quest for a 10th European Cup and his own contribution.
- Comparing German and Spanish football.
"Casillas es desde hace muchos años el mejor portero del mundo y le daría este premio. Ronaldo tiene muchas posibilidades y deseo que lo consiga".
"Casillas for many years has been the best goalkeeper in the world and I would give him this award (Ballon d'Or.) Cristiano Ronaldo has a good chance and I hope that he wins it."
On Olympique Lyonnais:
"En casa son algo más fuertes y juegan con mayor confianza en ellos mismos. Además suelen jugar de manera más agresiva".
"At home, they are stronger and play with more confidence in themselves. Moreover, they usually play in a more aggressive manner."
On Real Madrid:
"Nuestra ventaja es el manejo de la pelota, pero también nuestras individualidades. Tenemos muchos 'cracks' mundiales como Ronaldo, Benzema, Kaká o Di María. Queremos marcar muchos goles y volver a Madrid con los tres puntos".
"Our advantage is how we move the ball around but also our individual skills. We have many great international players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Kaká and Angel Di Maria. We want to score many goals and return to Spain with the three points."
On Madrid's Quest for a 10th European Cup and his contribution:
"Surely, Real Madrid is a mythical team and our objective is to win every possible title and that includes the Champions League. I play in the best club in the world. I'm a part of the usual starting XI and I have confidence in my manager. My goal is to get better and be able to help the team more."
On German and Spanish Football:
"En el fondo es casi igual. La única diferencia es que en España los equipos pequeños también tienen un nivel técnico elevado, cuando en Alemania se caracterizan más por su capacidad de entrega. Aquí los equipos suelen jugar más al fútbol".
"Basically, it's almost the same. The only difference is that in Spain, the smaller sides can also have a higher technical level. Whereas in Germany, teams are characterized more for their capacity to deliver the goods. Here, teams usually play more (entertaining) football."
