According to Univision, El Pais of Uruguay named Juan Sebastián Verón of Estudiantes de la Plata as their 2008 player of the year in the Americas. Journalists from 18 countries voted for Veron, with Juan Roman Riquelme of Boca Juniors only three points behind in second place.
Veron, 33, is nicknamed, "La Brujita," or "little witch." He has played with such storied European sides as Chelsea, Internazionale, Lazio, Manchester United, Parma, and Sampdoria of Genoa. He has been capped 60 times for Argentina.
Last year, there was speculation that Veron might play for DC United in Major League Soccer. In recent years, DC United has scouted and later signed many players from Argentina.
