Lazio 2 x Internazionale 1: Lazio Wins the Italian Supercup in Beijing

For the fourth time in its history, the Italian Supercup (the winner of the Scudetto versus the Coppa Italia winner) took place outside of Italy in Beijing, China on Saturday, 08 August 2009. The game was played in the hot and humid confines of the Bird's Nest Stadium in front of a full house of appreciative Chinese fans.

Inter dominated play in terms of possession (63% to 37%) and shots on goal (24 to 9); however, wasted many chances. In the second half, goals by Francelino Matulazem in the 63rd minute from a deflection by Julio Cesar, along with an excellent chip by Tommaso Rocchi in the 66th minute proved to be too much for Inter.

Samuel Eto'o
, in his first competitive appearance for Inter, scored their lone goal in the 77th minute on an excellent finish. Diego Milito had an apparent equalizer ruled offside in the 86th minute.

Fernando Muslera of Lazio made several fine saves in goal for the Romans.

Well done, Lazio.

Julio Cruz After the Game

"We hope to be concentrated and to win in the future like tonight. Let's enjoy this trophy that will remain in our history because it was won far away from Italy by a great performance by the team.

Inter? Two months ago, I was with them, but football is like this. With players, coaches, and directors who come and go. I hope today to have opened another chapter with Lazio and that it is good thing that will end well."

Julio Cruz
Julio (el jardinero) Cruz of Lazio faced his former Inter teammates
for the first time in Beijing after six successful years at the San Siro.

Dates of the 2009/2010 Serie A
"The Italian Football League has decided on the dates of the 2009/2010 season. As foreseen, the Serie A will begin a week earlier than this year on 23 August 2009, with the last fixture to be held on 16 May 2010, to give Marcello Lippi more time to prepare for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The winter break will be shorter, with the teams back in action on 6 January 2010, and only 3 midweek games: One in September, one in October and the other sometime between March and April.

The Italian Supercup is scheduled for 8 August 2009 from the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing, exactly a year after the opening ceremony of the Olympics. It will be the fourth time that the trophy has been presented overseas: in 2003 it was played at Giants Stadium (won by Juventus), the year before in Tripoli, Libya (another win by Juventus) and in 1993 in Washington, D.C. (a victory by AC Milan)."
