New Azzurri Shirt Unveiled by Puma for 2009 Confederations Cup

Image courtesy of Corriere dello Sport for illustrative purposes only.

On 15 June 2009 against the USA in Pretoria, South Africa, the Azzurri will wear a new shirt.

For some unknown reason, Puma, the kit sponsor for the Azzurri until 2014, has followed the path of Nike (who change the USA shirt every year) et al to alter another traditional shirt for their own selfish and ill-advised reasons.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Azzurri will also wear chestnut brown shorts. Another arrow in the heart of tradition. Brown shorts for Italy? (I won't mention brown shirts for Italy). ;-)

This new shirt resembles Lazio and Napoli of the Serie A, along with the national team kits of Argentina and Uruguay, respectively.

The Azzurri have always worn royal blue, which was patterned after the official color of the House of Savoy.

You don't change history and tradition for commercial reasons. I hope that Azzurri supporters will voice their displeasure to Puma. But the retailers know that football fans want the latest merchandise. As if "new" shirts make you more of a fan. I still have an Azzurri shirt from 1982. No stars. No corporate sponsorship. Priceless.
