Mister Donadoni Releases Azzurri Roster for Euro 2008

Mr. Donadoni released his provisional roster for Euro 2008.

He will still need to place one player from this group on the reserve list. There are two controversial choices: DeSanctis as the third keeper, and Cassano in the striking group. He should leave DeSanctis at home since his inclusion will be at the expense most likely of Montolivo. Rarely does a team use two keepers in a short tournament. Matteo Sereni of Torino had a much better year than either of Buffon's deputies, but Mister Donadoni seems to prefer known quantities. Amelia played for him at Livorno, but has yet to feature in any serious international competition other than being a back-up two years ago to Buffon.

Cassano, the jewel of Bari Vecchia, while on great form presently, is both a bold and wise move. Usually, he toes the line in the Giro Azzurro; however, as recently as a month ago, Mauro Camoranesi said "It would be better without him there." No doubt due to his temper rather than his sublime skills. But when you have a talent such as Cassano, it provides a manager with an incredible option. And keeps your opposition guessing.

Keepers

Gianlugi Buffon (Juventus), Marco Amelia (Livorno), Morgan De Sanctis (Sevilla)

Defenders

Christian Panucci (Roma), Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Marco Materazzi (Inter), Gianluca Zambrotta (Barcelona), Andrea Barzagli (Palermo), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Fabio Grosso (Lyon)

Midfielders

M
auro Camoranesi (Juventus), Andrea Pirlo (Milan), Gennaro Gattuso (Milan), Massimo Ambrosini (Milan), Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Simone Perrotta (Roma), Alberto Aquilani (Roma), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina)

Attackers

Luca Toni (Bayern Munich), Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Fabio Quagliarella (Udinese), Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus), Marco Borriello (Genoa), Antonio Cassano (Sampdoria).

Notes
  • Mr. Donadoni signed a 2 year extension with the Italian FA; however, there is a clause for rescission by either side. Hidden meaning: A bad showing at this event most likely will mean that he will not be on the bench when WC2010 qualification begins next Fall.
  • There will only be one friendly prior to the first game against Holland on 09 June. On 30 May, at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence, Italy will face Belgium at 2050 local time.
