Giuseppe Rossi Becomes the First American to Score in 3 Major European Leagues

This evening in Valencia, Giuseppe Rossi, a native of Clifton, New Jersey, set another record. He became the first American to score in three major European soccer leagues. DaMarcus Beasley, another talented young American, has scored in the Dutch Eredivisie, the English Premier League, and the Scottish Premier League.

In 2004, he began his European odyssey with Manchester United on their reserve team. A year later, he scored in the Premier League. Last year, he scored on his debut for Parma in the Serie A, and totaled nine goals in sixteen appearances as he helped them avoid relegation. Tonight, on a well-taken left-footed penalty kick that beat Santiago Canizares, Rossi, 20, scored in his debut for Villarreal of the Spanish La Liga. He played the entire game as Villlarreal defeated Valencia, 0 x 3, at the Mestalla.

Well done, Giuseppe. For a player who has not received the same level of American media attention as Freddy Adu, he has more results on the balance sheet. Perhaps now, Rossi will receive his proper acclaim. He has played several times for the Italian U-21; however, is not cap tied to the senior Azzurri team. He has yet to appear for any American national team. Perhaps Coach Bob Bradley will approach Rossi before Mister Donadoni does. Rossi has made his preference clear to play for the Azzurri. But as we have seen from his young career, he has been flexible enough to play in England, Italy, and Spain.

Fabio Capello met with Bob Bradley a few days ago in London. Perhaps young Rossi was one of their many discussion items. Regardless where he plays at the senior national team level, Rossi has shown that he has the maturity to compete in pressure situations.
