SuperLiga: LA Galaxy 2 x CF Pachuca 1

From the Home Depot Center, the LA Galaxy, without David Beckham, defeated the reigning Mexican and CONCACAF champions, Pachuca, in front of 27,000 fans.

LA started slowly, and seemed nervous in the defensive half. Pachuca took the game to them, and the first half was attack after attack by the Mexican side. But due to some good saves by Joe Cannon, along with Abel Xavier, who seemed everywhere, LA survived the arsenal.

In the second half, the Galaxy found their rhythm. In the 50th minute, an excellent pass by Landon Donovan was clinically chested down and half-volleyed by Alan Gordon into the right corner past a diving Calero. Gordon was the player substituted for Beckham on Saturday evening. Pachuca, who had 12 corner kicks in this game, pushed forward for the equalizer which came in the 78th minute by Rafael Marquez-Lugo. The Galaxy did not succumb to the pressure, and after another good pass by Donovan to Cobi Jones, Landon redirected the subsequent shot by Jones in the 78th minute for the win.

This victory must be a relief for Coach Frank Yallop, who has been under tremendous pressure. The team seemed more fluid than in the last two games, and the opposition gave LA a stern test. Landon Donovan had a very good game directing his teammates, and Gordon's finish was world-class.

To the credit of Telefutura, they only showed one image of David Beckham in the stands. With one of his sons, and what appeared to be his mother, Sandra. They mentioned that he was still hurt, and would not be on the bench. That, along with perhaps two or three other references to him, were the only times they said his name.
