Internazionale Sets The Serie A Consecutive Wins Record

Tonight at the Stadio Grande Torino, Inter Milan entered the history books of the Serie A. They have become the only team to win 12 consecutive games. With goals by Adriano, Ibrahimovic, and Materazzi, Inter defeated Torino, 1 to 3. For Interiste, the victory was especially sweet given that on the same day, bitter rivals Juventus lost for the first time in the Serie B, 1 to 0, against Mantova.

Coach Roberto Mancini, often criticized by the press and the Inter faithful, inks his name in the pages of calcio history. No other Serie A coach has achieved this particular distinction. Whether he remains at Inter next year is still unclear, but Mancini's credentials are steadily growing.

AS Roma is the only clear challenger to the Scudetto, and likely, Inter will focus their efforts on the Champions League. A competition which they have failed to win in over a generation.

Inter are starting to open up enough of a gap over Roma that even if Inter starts emphasizing the Champions League in March, April and May their lead may be so big that Roma won't be able to catch up.

Inter are overdue for a title win, ignoring last season's scudetto handed to them after Juve and Milan were deducted points for the calciopolis scandal. But this year's Inter team are much more consistent than past versions. I think a big reason is the play of Cambiasso, Vieira and Stankovic in midfield combined with the always professional displays of Javier Zanetti. Add in the more consistent goalscoring from the trio of Ibrahimovic, Crespo and Adriano and that is a potent and deep team. It will be fascinating to watch how they cope on the domestic and European fronts later in the year but for now they are building themselves a nice cushion over Roma.
