The Airplane Lands in London

Vincenzo Montella, aka "The Little Airplane," officially became a Fulham player today. After a brilliant Serie A career with Sampdoria and AS Roma, at the age of 32, Montella will take on a new adventure in the English Premier League. His playing time at Roma became virtually non-existent, and at times, 16 year old Stefano Okaka was the preferred choice of Coach Luciano Spalletti.

Some Italians, along with those with years of service in the Serie A, have found the pace and physical force of the EPL difficult to fathom. Much less assimilate to and flourish in. One exception was Gian Franco Zola who played several years for Chelsea FC. Montella is a subtle striker with a lethal left leg. He should be a good complement to the American, Brian McBride, up front for the Cottagers.

Here is a nice video of Vincenzo.

Montella is 32 now but he still has some good football in him. When Roma switched to using Totti as a lone forward there wasn't room for Montella to start plus injuries have slowed him the past few seasons but I've always felt Montella was a smart and opportunistic forward. I'll be interested to see if he can adjust to playing in England.

Meanwhile Montella's roster spot will be filled by Francesco Tavano, a versatile attacker who due to his own injuries never settled at Valencia. Tavano is on loan to Roma until the end of the current season. I don't think Tavano will be a starter now but he should become a very good replacement for any of Totti, Mancini or Taddei.
