Fabio Cannavaro: FIFA World Player of the Year

Tonight in Zurich, Fabio Cannavaro of Real Madrid and the Italian National team, was awarded FIFA's highest individual honor: World Player of the Year for 2006. He is the first defender to ever win this honor, and perhaps now some of his critics, who rudely commented after he won the Ballon D'Or, will be silenced forever.

I was reading the account of the evening in the Gazzetta dello Sport. Cannavaro had the following to say:

"I want to dedicate this award to all of Italian soccer. Everyone knows the problems that we had before the World Cup. This has to be an important signal of rebirth for all who play soccer. It has been an incredible year because I won the Scudetto, the World Cup, the Golden Ball and now this great acknowledgment that crowns a golden year. I thank FIFA, my coaches and all of my teammates... I hope that now those who criticize me will remain quiet."

Silence is golden, Signor Cannavaro, and you are now the best player in the world. Most of the critical voices had French surnames...
